Manau is the capital city of the Amazon. Its name was given for the first inhabitants of the territory, the Mamaos Indians. It has historical buildings from 17th century, as the Teatro Amazonas of neoclassic inspiration, and the incredible Porto Flutuante.
Also, it possesses traditional samples on the Mercado Modelo, where it is possible to acquire handicraft; the Palácio Municipal; several thematic museums dedicated to the flora and fauna of the Amazon as the Museu do Índio; Bosque da Ciência, and the Museu de Ciência Natural, and the Zoo. Other places you have to visit are the Parque do Mindú and the Reserva Ducke, an ecological park with excellent infrastructure to rest and to enjoy; and the aquarium, with the piracucú, the biggest fish of the zone.
Manaus offers a delicious typical gastronomy based on fishes and exotic fruits eaten in ice creams and juices. Other of its characteristics is the high quality of its hotels, some of them located within the forest. It has many types of hotels, sophisticated and ecological hotels, many of them constructed in the banks or floating on the rivers, but delivering a complete safety for the rest and relaxing treatments.
