It is known as the City of the Sun or the City of the Kings. It possesses an excellent hotel infrastructure and landscapes of great beauty. It is located on the coasts of the Atlantic Ocean, next to the Rio Potengi.
It possesses interesting historic monuments of neoclassic style, as the Forte dos Reis Magos with a shape of a star; the Coluna Capitalina donated by Benito Mussolini; the Nova Catedral; and the Centro de Turismo, a former jail where now is located a fair of local handicraft. And festivities as Forró, a musical festivity realized every Thursday.
Undoubtedly, the main attraction of the zone are its natural areas and the fishermen's rustic villages. To visit the whole city, the best alternative is to rent a buggy. The littoral is divided in two. The west coast has the wonderful beaches of Genipabu and the lagoons Pirangui and Jacumá. In the south, it is the Praia do Pipa.
The most visited beach is Ponta Negra, where is located the Morro do Careca, a dune of 120 meters. Another beach is Dos Artistas, a zone of surfers, and Areia Preta, with urban resorts. You can visit these dunes renting a buggy or even an exotic camel. Genipabu is the capital of the dunes.
In Jacumá is realized the Aerobunda. The Aerobunda consist of descending for enormous dunes enjoying the speed and the adrenaline. On the other hand, the lagoon Pirangui is ideal for the diving and walking. In addition, activities as the skibunda can be realized, a cable railway where the visitors are tied to a rope to slip above the lagoon.
Some beautiful and natural resorts are Barra de Tabatinga, with the familiar attraction of the Parque dos Tubarões and the presence of dolphins in the late afternoon; and Maracaju, with wonderful coral reefs with diversity of fishes.
In Natal, all kind of nautical sport can be practiced, as windsurfing, surfing, diving, and swimming. Additionally, it is very practiced the trekking in the Parque das Dunas and penetrating in the mysterious plantations of sugar cane.
